I’ve long had a difficult time understanding the lack of emotion – originally of Spock and Vulcans in general, but even moreso of Data. Without emotion, I struggle to see where the root of desire is formed – why does Tuvok get up every morning if he has no desire to achieve anything and no fear of getting in trouble? With Vulcans of course there is emotion – they are just suppressed rather than acted upon. Actually the very idea that Vulcans have no emotions is plain silly – they display more annoyance with others than any other creature in the galaxy.

But with Data, where supposedly there is no emotion at all, now I really struggle to understand what would drive such a person. For a character without emotion, Data is shown to enjoy doing a lot of stuff – holodeck jaunts as Sherlock Holmes for instance. The first couple of seasons in particular show lots of random stuff making Data smile.

Strangest of all, Data is programmed for sex but has no emotions or, presumably, libido. Huh. An Android with a libido is like the mule with a spinning wheel. Nobody knows how he got it, and danged if he knows how to use it. I guess Tasha didn’t complain.

Anyhow, after much confusion as to why my comic wasn’t showing up, turns out that they don’t show up until after you schedule a post any more – they used to, but now they don’t, so you just think that it’s broken. Ah well, I can live with “working”.

So, once again this morning I tried looking at some Deep Space 9 to see if I could find any funny potential in there for comics, but all I did was end up accidently watching whole episodes, and completely failed to find any of those two Cardassians who stand on a roof on Cardassia Prime all day watching Gul Dukat’s propaganda videos.

And so, ironically, Scotty set back Federation warp drive technology a hundred years when he sabotaged the Excelsior while Kirk stole the Enterprise. Perhaps.

Also, looking back over Star Trek VI . . .my god, the Excelsior is actually really beautiful – I guess I just didn’t really notice before.

Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that all the comics have now picked up little bits of branding in the bottom corner. I was indulging my vanity by searching for myself on Google, and found a smattering of my comics posted on forums and so on, all just stealing my bandwidth by linking directly to my images. Actually I don’t mind that at all – but it was also clear that nobody would ever know where these random comics came from – hence now they all have little EvilPicard.com markings on them.

Finally, to any new readers, as always, welcome. If you like my comics, please join the Evil Picard group on Facebook. The number of Likes that I have is about my only reward for doing this, and I generally only post when there is a new comic up.

So, it begins, a glorious 4 days off work thanks to our Lord getting nailed up. First good break I’ve had since Christmas. Maybe this will give me time to get some comics done ahead of time. lol, right, sure.

And the other thing ends and begins anew. Tucked away as I am in a valley we have until now been one of those small pockets of people that was passed over by digital television. In fact, until now we were still living in this National Lampoons’ European Vacation stereotype – “Hey Mom, there’s only 4 channels and no MTV!” So yes, they’ve turned off analogue BBC 2, and suddenly I have a handful of digital channels. So, right now it’s 2am and I’m watching a documentary about post-war steam locomotives on the then newly nationalised British Railways, on BBC4 no less. Geek.

Also I updated WordPress and things were broken for a while, but I think it’s okay now. At least I am able to post a new comic.

Perhaps I should start trying to use this post-comic space as a blog of sorts, since writing anything significant in my actually blog generally feels too daunting, and since people actually visit this page. I spent today decyphering some serial port drivers written in bad spaghetti x86 assembly code, and over the weekend I made my partner watch the Gamesters of Triskellion. I figure if we get the “bad” (read “good”) episodes of Trek out of the way first, by the time we move onto TNG in a serious way she’ll think it’s not so bad.

I’m thinking about changing the comic a little, or rather the update schedule. I’m concerned that trying to do too many strips is having a negative impact on quality, so I may cut back to once a week in the near future. I don’t like to cut back, but sometimes it feels like I’m doing poor quality jokes to meet a deadline, and nobody wants that.
